How good are Chicago-area hospitals?

Posted on February 5, 2021 Hospital Negligence, Medical Malpractice

The Chicago area has some of the finest hospitals in the country, and a recent study from a Washington-based nonprofit supports that claim. In our region, most patients can rely on the medical care and services they receive. Even though patients and their families expect top-notch care, sometimes, they may not receive it. That is when you must be careful.

Let us dig deeper into the study released on Dec. 8 that ranked more than 2,600 acute-care hospitals in the country.

Latest ratings

The Leapfrog Group is an independent organization focused on health care quality and safety in naming the top hospitals of 2020. Twice a year, the nonprofit reviews data that measures hospital safety.

Among the areas it reviews include how hospitals prevent injuries and infections, medical errors, problems with safety, problems with surgery, accidents as well as the effectiveness of doctors, nurses and medical staff.

One Chicago hospital among the country’s elite

Of the 60 Chicago-area hospitals reviewed, 21 were given the top “A” ratings. Within that group, a Chicago hospital ranked among the 105 elite acute-care medical centers in the country. That hospital — Rush University Medical Center — is one of the top 48 teaching hospitals in the U.S., according to The Leapfrog Group.

Among the Chicago-area hospitals to receive top rankings include nine within the AMITA Health system; two within NorthShore University HealthSystem; and two within the Northwestern Health system. See the complete list of all the Chicago-area hospitals ranked.

Two hospitals at low end

Only two of the 60 hospitals ranked below average. They included Advocate South Suburban Hospital in Hazel Crest, which received a “D” ranking, and the John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County, which received an “F” ranking.

Please consider these rankings if you seek medical treatment. You want peace of mind when treated at a facility known for its knowledgeable, reliable and compassionate health care workers.
