Woman awarded over $8 million in hospital negligence case

Posted on January 27, 2015 Hospital Negligence

Hospital negligence and other mistakes made by medical staff members can cause patients to suffer from serious injuries. Sadly, many patients never fully recover from those injuries caused by hospital negligence and require ongoing treatment for the rest of their lives. Illinois blog readers may be interested in learning about a woman who was recently awarded over $8 million from a medical malpractice claim.

Back in Sept. 2010, a woman visited a medical facility. While she was there, medical staff allegedly did not monitor her blood sugar when it decreased to an excessively low level. As a result, she endured injuries to her brain that are now permanent. Reportedly, the woman is permanently brain damaged, and she is never going to be capable of living on her own. She will also need to be cared for around the clock for many years to come.

The jury ultimately determined that the doctor and the medical facility were responsible for the injuries. Her legal guardian was awarded $8.3 million for her care. No other information about this case was reported.

Brain damage can cause patients to suffer from ailments that may require round-the-clock care for the rest of their lives. In addition, patients are often faced with an enormous amount of medical costs for ongoing treatment. Patients who were injured due to hospital negligence retain the right to file medical malpractice claims against the physicians and/or medical facilities deemed responsible for the injuries. The civil court system in Illinois typically adjudicates these types of matters and awards damages based upon evidence that the defendant deviated from a medically acceptable standard of reasonable care.
