Woman files suit against hospital for surgical errors

Posted on July 6, 2017 Surgical Errors

Complications can often arise following a surgery in Illinois or elsewhere around the country. Infections, reactions to anesthesia or shock are common after someone undergoes an operation. However, some issues unfortunately occur as a result of a physician’s surgical errors. A woman in another state recently filed a lawsuit against a major hospital following a mistake made during a surgical procedure.

A woman filed the lawsuit in a county state court regarding a Dec. 2014 kidney and pancreatic transplant surgery. The lawsuit states that a physician performed the surgery with a medical camera, assisted by two other doctors. The woman was unaware that the camera was left inside her following the surgery.

When the woman returned for an exam at the hospital the following June, the device was discovered. An additional surgery was necessary to remove the camera. The lawsuit claims that the woman incurred medical expenses related to the additional surgery. She also claimed that she suffered undue hardship, significant pain and suffering, lost wages as well as future pain and suffering.

According to a fundraising page, the woman has several medical issues. Complications from Type I Diabetes has resulted in blindness in one eye and kidney failure. She also suffered from paralysis following a stroke. The woman has asked that a jury determine how much money she is owed if the lawsuit verdict goes in her favor.

Surgical errors can be catastrophic for Illinois residents, especially knowing that many could have been avoided. If someone has experienced such negligence, it may be wise to file a medical malpractice lawsuit. A knowledgeable attorney can evaluate a situation and determine how best to proceed with the litigation process. A successful outcome in a lawsuit can provide families with compensation for hospital expenses and damages for lost wages and pain and suffering.
