How safe were Chicago-area hospitals in 2022?

Posted on February 4, 2023 Hospital Negligence

Hospitals in the Chicago area fared relatively well in 2022 for health and cleanliness. Leapfrog provides a hospital safety grade twice yearly, and 71 Chicago hospitals earned a grade, ranging from “A” to “F.”

According to hospitalsafetygrade.org, Leapfrog rates hospitals according to infections, problems with surgeries, safety problems, error prevention and hospital staff performance.

Eighteen hospitals in the Chicago area received an A grade. Unfortunately, six hospitals received a D. See below for a list of the best and worst hospitals, and exercise caution if you use one of the failing facilities.

Hospitals that received “A” grades for safety

The safest hospitals in Chicago, according to Leapfrog, were

  • AdventHealth Bolingbrook
  • AdventHealth GlenOaks
  • AdventHealth Hinsdale
  • AdventHealth La Grange
  • Ascension Mercy
  • Ascension Resurrection
  • Elmhurst Memorial Hospital
  • Loyola Gottlieb Memorial Hospital
  • MacNeal Hospital
  • Northwest Community Hospital
  • Northwest Health – Porter
  • Northwestern Medicine Central DuPage Hospital
  • Northwestern Medicine Delnor Hospital
  • Rush Copley Medical Center
  • Rush Oak Park Hospital
  • Rush University Medical Center
  • Silver Cross Hospital
  • University of Chicago Medical Center.

Hospitals that received “D” or “F” grades

Hospitals that received a D were:

  • Advocate Christ Medical Center
  • Methodist Hospitals – Northlake Campus
  • Methodist Hospitals – Southlake Campus
  • Roseland Community Hospital
  • Vista Medical Center East
  • Weiss Memorial Hospital

One hospital, South Shore Hospital, received an F.

If you do not see your hospital on this list, it received either a B or C grade. If your hospital underperformed, it does not mean you should stop using it. However, be wary of the safety procedures at the hospitals that received low grades. Do not put your health at risk for reasons of convenience.
